Laura grew up in a war torn country. She tried to go into politics but rationalizing war strategy made her cry, so she became a storyteller. She began in New York theater, devising staged pieces from James Joyce to James Baldwin and performing scandalous one woman shows about finding God through extreme sex acts. She’s drawn most to complex, character-driven stories that take the air out of the room and shine a light on the unseen parts of painful human experiences. Her first short film, PLAY DATE, premiered at the Dallas International Film Festival where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for Best Short and it has garnered the support of heavy hitting executive producers like Academy Award winner Kenneth Lonergan and Emmy nominated J. Smith-Cameron. It has gone on to win Outstanding Director at AIFF and Honorable Mention at HollyShorts Film Festival. Campbell is a co-writer on the feature screenplay LUKE, which was selected by Aaron Janus, Director of Original Films at Netflix, to receive the Honorable Mention Genre Feature Film Launch Fellowship for the 2025 Stowe Story Labs Producer Lab in Vermont. Laura’s most recent project is the short film script SQUIRREL which recently secured First Prize for Best Short Script at Flickers Rhode Island International Film Festival, won the Outstanding Screenplay Competition, the Pandora Short Film Grant, is the recipient of a Vermont Creation Grant, and a Films That Make a Difference Grant. Laura was on the 2025 Oscar Qualifying Dallas International Film Festival Jury. She received her MFA from Columbia University and her BA from Tulane University. She is a proud board member of Film Fatales, a non-profit advocating for parity in the film industry.
